One show Blackfoot opened for him, before they went big--outrageous set. Medlocke & Hargett came out after their set to stand by Leslie's amps & watch him play. He played a short set, no encore, & there was a riot when they announced he'd left. The other time he closed an arena show (lineup: Rush, Ted Nugent, Blue Oyster Cult, REO Speedwagon, LW.) That night he blew up his Marshall during his big solo!

Sure Hendrix played more than just distorted sound effects, and he was daym good at the blues when he played them. But lets be honest, he was known more for the esoteric sounds he could get out of his strat than anything else. Leslie was known for his Gibson tone and vibrato. Hell these two sit at the "tippy-top" of the guitar world. And they always will.
One more thing, ... By: vonrex1. on 27 Aug 08, 07:06:51 One more thing, just a matter of interest, perhaps... Leslie told me the guitar that was stolen at the airport that night was a black Les Paul that Peter Frampton had given him. It would have been fun to hear him play THAT too, no? But then my brother probably wouldn't have videotaped him... So maybe we're better off with a one-time divergence from form.
I don't hear any ... By: vonrex1. on 27 Aug 08, 05:20:50 I don't hear any feedback in The Wind Cries Mary or Little Wing. And I hear some hellified blues in Red House. To say that Hendrix only played feedback is just wrong. Listen to him on the twelve string acoustic... But I ALSO love Leslie West and his Gibson sound. And as you say, it's not the guitar, it's the guy playing it. I think a Gibson and a Fender are both nice to hear. I have played both for years. They're just different. To me it was fun to hear Leslie play a Fender once.
Hendrix made great ... By: depper. on 27 Aug 08, 03:39:15 Hendrix made great feedback. He could have done the same with a Les Paul or any other guitar. Hendrix would have been Hendrix whatever guitar he played. Feedback is just that, feedback. Leslie relied on the blues, guitar tone and vibrato far more than Hendrix did. And Leslie is as tied to a Les Paul Jr as Colonel Sanders is tied to chicken.

That being said, ... By: depper. on 26 Aug 08, 20:51:33 That being said, his chops were still there. His ability to grab tone from a guitar was inimitable. I must say I love seeing him pull tone out of a boring Strat (sorry vonrex1, I love your story! But to me all strats are boring. Les Paul Jrs for the win!)
Last song of the ... By: fredvs. on 09 Jun 08, 14:13:07 Last song of the set. Bo starts by missing all the strings on a strum! He gets into a wild version of "Hey Bo Diddley", then plays the drums and then dances. Remember, this was in 1981. The bulges in his pockets show that he didn't want to leave his wallet or money in the dressing room.
Bo kind of made this tune out of nothing. He was in a playful mood and just started playing this and the longer it goes on the better it gets. Unedited
Here's Bo in a small club in DC in 1981. He was in rare form and playing around with some of his tunes. It's raw and unedited. I shot it and have never published it anywhere before now.

Thanks.
Real poor quality video of Bo in 1978 in Wash DC. Hard core Bo fans might find it interesting, but casual fans will probably not enjoy it because of the low quality. I posted it because it is the only copy of this concert and better than nothing.

A lot of people thought that Bo could only make songs like this in the studio with editing, but here he proves that he can do it in person. Note the close of shot of him playing chords below the bridge of the guitar. Also, note the groove that he gets going before the bands starts playing.
I don't think I've ever seen Bo perform in the "suit" he had made for the Black Gladiator Album cover photo. It's one of a kind. I'm not sure if suit pants and his hat go along with the rest this outfit, but, it's pure Bo Diddley!

A one chord monster riff with a west African "hambone" rhythm by one of the most influential rockers. No fuzz boxes then, just overdriven amps using lots of treble played on his custom made square shaped guitar.

Absolutely Brilliant. Like a Locomotive going out of controlled control. Never saw him, lots of kudos to those who chose to film, edit & produce this timeless piece of art. And to Bo for making it happen! Bo Bless Y'all !
By: atomicboogie. on 13 Nov 08, 02:38:41
Of course Rock n Roll wasn't invented in Britain!!! We all know that, but it's origins go back further than Bo and Elvis though!
By: NDMike. on 08 Nov 08, 07:16:46
I was blessed to see Bo Diddley at Rockefellars in Houston, Texas and he put on one of the greatest shows I have ever seen. Omar and the Howlers led in and they were fantastic too. I still get chills thinking about that show way back in 1983. Just awesome!
By: thom225. on 07 Nov 08, 04:19:19
Don't let anyone tell you that rock n' roll was invented in Britain... the who, led zepllen rubbish. Bo Didley and Elvis invented it in America.

By: toilekrap. on 28 Oct 08, 04:18:58
i think you display your own stupidity at this point. bo's influence goes way beyond punk hard rock and metal, that's belittling to his legacy. guitars have everything to do with hip hop. you just show that you don't know shit about hip hop or evolution of music therefore you can't make a valid argument, thus your comment has o0zeroeffect0o. (actually it looks like negativeeffect from your comment rating)
