In a way the camera ... By: richtomes. on 27 Jul 08, 10:06:05 In a way the camera work echoes the communicative ambient onstage - two soloists rather than a dialogue. I love at 3.25 - Vengerov finishes his passage rather brilliantly and flashes a glance at Bashmet, it seems to me expecting some kind of smile, or spirit of fun, but gets a stern face from Bashmet - Vengerov does an almost imperceptible double take, as he checks to make sure ! Bashmet doesn't look like a lot of fun to work with, and the result is a little like two cockerals in competition.

Wow - that's SO ... By: violasrule68. on 11 Jul 08, 09:53:07 Wow - that's SO interesting! Vengerov's playing style actually makes Bashmet's style sound introverted!
A real shame the cameraman couldn't just film from the front and capture more of the interaction between the two though. One of the chief beauties of this piece is the way the two soloists have to communicate and mirror each other's phrasing during the performance. I've heard that aspect balanced much more thrillingly than this, but this is lovely nonetheless.

I think Mozart would be impressed with this. Vengerov and Bashmet's interpretations are dazzling and powerful. They brought their own style into it while keeping Mozart's alive. This sounds lush and emotional rather than dry and springy to me. However much I love this recording, I think I'm going to die if I dont get my hands on the Anne-Sophie Mutter/ Yuri Bashmet recording of this.

An excellent ... By: CycloneJosh. on 20 Jan 08, 07:37:21 An excellent performance! I'm a violist & I know this piece, & her playing is top-rate. Her sound is beautiful & expressive, the articulation is precise, & the intonation is accurate-- admirable given this is a live performance of very difficult material. Her posture is weird, but who cares? Because of the inherent awkwardness of playing viola, many great players have unorthodox solutions to the technical challenges. What matters is the result-- & this is a truly great performance!

Wow This is bad. ... By: BSG751. on 06 Jul 07, 05:44:11 Wow This is bad. Bashmet doesn't play loud enough, and he's weird at conducting. The song is 13 minutes long. Either it's severely edited, or they just cut out a lot of stuff durring the preformance. Watch the Issac Stern and Pinchas Zukerman version. That's the way it's supposed to be.

I'm a bassoon player, and both versions are awesome, but if I'm not mistaken, the original was for viola, the bassoon version, by Weber himself, came later!
I have an edition which superposes both! The Bassoon seems to be more elaborate on the Rondo!

Sadly, there is not a video on YouTube of the three of them as soloists for the Beethoven Triple Concerto. The second recording on that CD is Oistrakh and Rostropovich doing Brahms' double concerto. If all of my CDs were to disappear, that would be the very first CD on my "to buy" list. (I have Rostropovich doing the six parts of the Dvorak Cello Concerto in "My Favorites".
BTW a simple search ... By: gerryrains. on 18 Jun 07, 01:20:38 BTW a simple search on David Oistrakh will turn up many videos. The last time that I looked there were videos of him playing the Brahms' violin concerto and doing a much better job than anyone else whom you may have heard. Of course Sviatoslav Richter, whose pianist skills were on a par with Oistrakh's violinist skills makes for a "MUST search". And to round it out, search for "Mstislav Rostropovich", the third member of the "Big Three". (cont.)
Please feel free to ... By: gerryrains. on 18 Jun 07, 00:34:45 Please feel free to raid my "My Favorites" or my public playlist "David Oistrakh". I also recommend my public playlist "Sviatoslav Richter" which has playing solo and also in conjunction with Oistrakh. BTW Igor Oistrakh, David's son, IMHO isn't worth a listen.

The only piece in ... By: gerryrains. on 16 Jun 07, 01:39:04 The only piece in which you might hear that was recorded 25 years after he had quit the viola for the violin. That is Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for Strings (this piece) where his son Igor Oistrakh played the violin and David the viola. But he had long since ceased recording for the viola until he recorded that one piece with his son. It's not a fair piece on which to judge.
A good performance ... By: theredviola. on 15 Nov 08, 16:48:10 A good performance of the Rondo section, but the high part where you are practicably picking your nose (you viola players know what I mean) could barley be heard - which makes me sad because I worked my butt off to get that perfectly in tune (which is still isn't!) but to know it will just be covered up by the orchestra (much like a lot of the pice) is disheartening. I'm glad that I picked the Bloch Suite for Viola and Orchestra to audition in a competition with rather than this piece.

By: CycloneJosh. on 22 Jan 08, 20:03:45 I'm a big fan of Yuri Bashmet's-- I think he is one of the greatest living violists (along with Pinchas Zukerman and Kim Kashkashian)-- however, I was not excited by this particular performance. It's professional and clean, but somehow feels... routine. Granted, this is a very light piece-- there's nothing too deep about it-- but he just doesn't seem very engaged with the material. However, he can and does play romantic repertoire beautifully-- like Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata.

Something is ... By: bckm54. on 15 Dec 07, 20:22:16 Something is missing here. I'm not sure what it is, maybe the passion, maybe the technique, but it sounds somewhat subpar. Also I think a violist of his stature should play from memory and not need the music - it seems a little amateurish to me. The camera work is simply dreadful - focusing on musicians who are not playing - sad.
