No sir, Alternative rock is a genre that describes fuck-near everything now-a-days. If it's emo, then you're saying R.E.M. is emo, which is bull. Emo however is also a sub-genre of Alt. rock. Grunge being a sub-genre to Alternative rock doesn't mean it's less important in any way, because pretty much everything from the 90s is too.

Yeah good point. I've asked around and found out grunge is actually a sub-style of alternative. So while grunge sounds like alternative, alternative doesn't necessarily sound like grunge. But yeah, when you listen to grunge songs you can definitely hear more distortions and sort of a "clash" between instruments.
