If it wasn't for Syd Barett, there would be no PINK FLOYD, LYMBO, you talk about facts, here is a fact for you. Yes,maybe Syd wasn't very polished in his writing but what he was, was ORIGINAL,all his songs were unique.Its easy to dismiss him now after listening to Pink Floyd's later works but at that paticular time period,he created songs from scratch.Floyd used the base he created and further refined it to come up with wat they created later.

I really feel sad when I read about him. Where his life went. I mean he had so much going for him. After he left the band he was engaged to his Girlfriend Gala Pinion but they split later on. And he had nobody but his family. I totally agree with you Knickd1979 Early Floyd and later Floyd are totally different. Syd brought a certian creative energy and spirit to the band so when he left so did that energy and spirit. Then the bands songs though still good became darker and deeper. Totally different. RIP Syd We do miss you.

Very true, especially considering when Gilmour joined Floyd, he was asked to sound as much like Syd as possible to cover for him. To Dave's great credit, he did a lot of things to help Syd after he left Floyd, like helping him record his solo albums and putting several Syd songs on later Floyd Greatest Hits collections, so Syd could get some royalty money. Syd was Floyd until he left the band...after that Floyd became a totally different animal (pun intended!)

I totally agree! Syd's singing style sounds EXACTLY like the style Roger Waters started using on the later albums (Animals, Wall, Final Cut.) I would say, considering just how much money he made mining the subject of Syds mental breakdown (much of Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, and the Wall), and the aping of his singing style, Waters owes a HUGE debt to Mr. Barrett. What fragile beauty Syd had in his music!

I think that if Opel would have been a finished product it would definitively be Syd's best album... all of the demo songs are just awesome! They shine even unpolished... or it could even be that being unpolished suited them well... Barrett's eponym album is the more produced one and is the one I like the less...

The thing is that Floyd's original producer refused to do Syd's solo albums, the other one actually gave up Syd and EMI didn't want to provide another one, so the task was left to David Gilmour, Roger Waters and Richard Wright, who were unexperienced and were working in their own records by then. But the main reason this sounds crappy is because SYD was acting irrationally and wasted too much studio hours. He resulted to be worst in the studio than live after his crisis.

I agree, compare Wright's instrumental's to Barrett's and there is a certain degree in similarity. Or even their songs, if you listen to Paint Box is a bit more of a Barrett-y feel to it than other of their post-Syd period. Any Colour You Like in Dark Side of The Moon, a Rick composition is probably the most psychedelic track on the album. So I totally agree that After Syd, Rick was prolly the most Psychedelic in the band.

I'll agree on Syd Barrett being the most psychedelic member of the band, after that they all rate about the same. I might rate Roger Waters as being a tad more psychedelic than Nick, Rick and Dave, but not by much. Hard to believe they recorded Piper At The Gates Of Dawn in the same studio and at the same time as The Beatles recorded SGT. Pepper.

I wouldn't say crap... I thought Animals was a great album. Just because Pink Floyd steered away from a psychadelic sound after Barret left doesn't mean they got worse, in my opinion. Syd was a musical genius, but Floyd's newer sound was and is still pretty impressive.
