It sounds like you have a good understanding of the stitch. If you want your piece wider, you will need to crochet a long chain in the beginning and then work your piece from there. If you wanted to make an afghan, you might crochet 200 or more chains. You will need one of the real long crochet hooks.

I'm trying to learn how to crochet an afghan, but I'm lossed. I mastered this stitch from your video and currently, I have yarn woven into a tunisian stitch that is 15 chains wide and approx 15" long. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do next, i.e. how do I get it wider? Do I make many small pieces and sew them together, or is there a stitch that I can add on to the piece I have now? Unfortunately the curl is something that comes along with tunisian crochet. You can add an edging once it is complete and it will tame the curl a bit. You can lightly press and block it with some starch.
