Even Snafu's name was nearly taboo for the Army. The first cartoon ("Coming: Snafu" 1943) explains his name as "Situation Normal, All..." (long pause) "All Fouled Up".

That's true about getting away with more things in these cartoons. Words like Hell and damn were practically off-limits in regular cartoons and feature films back then. SNAFU cartoons weren't shown to the general public, and they were aimed at adult males in the service, so there would naturally be more sex and foul language in these. Still pretty tame for today's standards though.

At best my history courses in high school only got as far as the 1930s-we never got to the 1940s or the US official involvement in WWII. I say at best because my American History course didn't even get to the 20th century

I don't know if it was cheaper or not (costs went up during the war effort, animation cels often had to be washed and re-used to save costs), but you're right, it did grab the soldiers' attention. Props to Termite Terrace for doing their part for the war.

What is the print on the top of his halo? It almost looks as though it says 1944, which makes perfect sense as this is the year that this particular SNAFU cartoon was made.

This cartoon was made during WW2 as a sort of instructional video for people who enlisted in the army. After all, it was less expensive to draw a plane then film one flying right? It also kept the viewers attention more easily.
