Protein synthesis: an epic on the cellular level
Posted by: miraclemart
Video duration: 803 seconds
Global video hits: 390959
Directed in 1971 by Robert Alan Weiss for the Department of Chemistry of Stanford University and imprinted with the "free love" aura of the period, this short film continues to be shown in biology class today. It has since spawn a series of similar funny attempts at vulgarizing protein synthesis. Narrated by Paul Berg, 1980 Nobel prize for Chemistry.

How does the helicase 'know' where the start and stop codons are in the first place? Secondly, which came first? The helicase which unzips/rezips the DNA strand or the DNA which makes the helicase in the first place? What is the origin of genetic information. Where did it come from? Is it found in nature outside of already living DNA coded organisms?

This was a great explanation! Thank you =)

great vid. My teacher explains it real fast. like this. "Blahblahblahblahblahblah okay !! Do you get understand?!!!"

Something which makes a teacher good is if they address different learning styles. This takes the form of repeating in different ways with different kinds of activities, reading, looking, doing, discussing, writing etc. Such things also re-enforce each other and make a lesson much more interesting. Something you may want to think about is what kind of learning style you are. You may then want to study to your strengths. But really, teachers should know this stuff, it's basic teacher training.

Now that's what I call a RIBOSOME ASSEMBLY !!!!! GOOD JOB!

thank you so much for this

ahhh. i get it now. my bio teacher has been teaching my class (and i use the term "teaching" very loosely)for a couple of weeks. and i never understood it in class.i failed every quiz.- i get online and i instantaneously get it. ugh. bad teachers suck

But remember, Helicase is used in DNA replication. RNA Polymerase also breaks up the DNA chain but only temporarily whereas Helicase separates the two strands along with SSB's to prevent the strands from reattaching.

I hate you people. If you have no comment, then don't comment, okay? It's the same as raising your hand in class and saying "I don't have anything to say." By not commenting, you will demonstrate your lack of a comment. Understand?
By: EvilZattaX. on 05 Nov 08, 19:25:45
I seriously hope you're joking, but under the assumption that you aren't, the complexity of a system doesn't prove that it couldn't gravitate to such alone.

The green substance in moon shape before the messenger rna transcription is an enzyme that is breaking the double helix, I suppose it can be helicase, but I am not sure...
By: sciencepullout. on 04 Nov 08, 15:49:14
Would you say this is proof of intelligent design? Just look at how everyone works, even the music.
By: powersonic1992. on 30 Oct 08, 14:28:55
that's RNA polymerase, which is the enzyme used to unwind the DNA strand to form the mRNA.
By: allcantfind. on 29 Oct 08, 11:53:53
what is the green substance in moon shape??

thats a nice video but complicate for first grade of hight school not the animacion but the text I liked video and wached it like 5 times
By: plindboe. on 17 Oct 08, 08:18:09
As I understand it, the animation is grossly simplified, for educational purposes. It's not like these molecules float around in isolation drawn to their partner molecules. Rather there are countless molecules floating and vibrating chaotically around, constantly bumping into each other. Sooner or later molecules with the right 3-dimensional conformation are bound to meet up.
