From what I've read, he is still undergoing rehabilitation. It was a long time ago I read it though, so he might be able to play again.

Jason is one hell of a bassist. This guy is awesome. Even though Robert replaced him. He will always be part of metallica's history.

What? Cliff died a tragic death (R.I.P) from an accident with the band's tour bus in 1986. Cliff was thrown out of the window and the bus flipped over and landed on top of him... Jason, however, injured his shoulder when he tried to catch a falling bass amp. He was subjected to immediate surgery. I think he injured his other one on a later occasion.
