Yeah- Ubuntu has nice window animations... but computers don't really need that. Linux hardly has any programs that are capatible; only programs such as Firefox are capatible. I go with Vista.

just search for "linux" on google and you'll most likely get a few sites in your homeland about it or you can try wikipedia, check around which flavor fits you the best and try it out.. some popular distros are Ubuntu (or Kubuntu), Debian, Mandriva, Novell (suse), Debian, Fedora (Red Hat). I myself use Mandriva 64bit on my laptop and it works great, webcam, wireless, bluetooth, firewire, DVD+/-RW, all but some of the "FN-keys" more or less worked out-of-the-box.

You have to be aware that supercomputers and REAL superscale servers runs on UNIX-like OSes different from Linux. Aix and even some of the bsd distros are far better for server OS. Linux is not even on the same chart with things like Solaris, zOs, Aix when it came to the real deal. And yes they are most likely not open source, and yes the developers making this stuff are better payed even compared to MS folks.

¡error!: 1) linux en méxico por lo menos trabaja en servidores de telmex, cemex y otras empresas. 2)sun, ibm, dell, hp, el banco central europeo, el banco central de china, sco y varios más trabajan tanto en servidores como en pc, en linux. 3) gobiernos de varios países ya migaron hacia ese s.o. china, venezuela, rusia, japon, brasil,cuba, alemania, méxico (en parte). Linux está creciendo. Las grandes empresas empiezan a voltear hacia este so. Sin embargo no cabe duda que Win sigue teniendo buenas cosas. Por ejemplo su IDE Visual Studio o su SGBD SQLServer. Son muy estables e incluso las aplicaciones en C# compiladas en VS son más veloces que las compiladas en Mono. Linux crece pero le falta capturar la mirada de las grandes corporaciones para empezar a competir de manera seria. Pero cuidado, ya lo está haciendo. Bien por Linux, solo uso linux.

That is one of the most atractive things in GNU/Linux, Compiz, when people see it, instantly they want to have Linux, even if they dont know Windows. But even you dont have knowledge of terminals, you could use an Ubuntu, Knoppix based distro, most of today Linux distros are start to being more easy than back in the days. I use Debian and runs fine with all that stuff, but at the end is just an eye-candy and doesnt give something usefull, at least Desktop Switch.

La arquitectura es diferente, uno trabaja sobre pc (linux) y el otro sobre un hard pensado para ese soft(mac). Teoricamente sun tiene el soft mas desarrollado segun ellos. Hay una diferencia que no parecer ver. Linux no es TODO el sistema, es el núcleo, que es de lo que se habla en la entrevista. Eso deja fuera cualquier entorno de ventanas y/o aplicaciones varias. Linux, como núcleo (que es lo que es) es el mejor en rendimiento en la actualidad. Busca benchmarks y míralo. Más del 70% de los supercomputadores usan Linux. Curioso... :-)

Yo no digo que es un sistema de frikis, eso os lo habéis inventado vosotros. Yo uso Linux y Mac desde hace años, y el Windows siempre lo he odiado. Lo que yo quería es expresar lo importante que es para mi que sea de código libre, poderlo modificar a tu gusto es increible. Aún así, a Linux aún le falta mucho para acercarse al nivel de rendimiento de un Mac. Yo soy defensor del código abierto hasta la muerte, eso es así. Yo uso Ubuntu, Fedora y Mac OS X, he usado hasta el Solaris. Cuando digo algo es porque se del tema. Yo lo de que decía es que no se le saca todo el jugo al Linux hasta que aprendes a exprimirlo, me refiero cuando modificas y compilas tú los programas a tu gusto. Hace años que no uso Windows porque me parece que está en la edad de piedra comparado con Linux y aún más comparado con Mac. Linux es genial, yo no he dicho lo contrario.

Como dice el otro amigo es completamente falso, Precisamente esas aplicaciones de las q hablas son faciles y vienen de serie en distribuciones como Ubuntu. En windows tienes q star buscando los programas q te vas a bajar (y encima suele ser ilegal) en Ubuntu te basta un click para bajarte cualkier programa. Las cosas faciles se hacen igual de facil q en Windows, son las dificiles las q cuestan mas (pero tambien da muchisima mas libertad)

:D OK, I don't want to extend this any more, it's just that when someone says that he/she's using Unix (which actually doesn't exist), u know what I mean, well they are actually using the console for making their life easier, otherwise they are just using a window system not Unix. That is why people like it so much, u can do almost anything using shell programming and Ansi C :D (please don't start :D)... if u really are into Unix I invite you to use Plan9...for real...good luck !!! :-)

the thing is.. we both are seemingly alluding at the same thing but from different angles :P a new comer DOES not need to know the details about shell programming to start using *unix, it's the same for windows as well..you ideally should know about stuff before delving into the OS, and it is the same for any other OS.. i agree that windows may provide just a bit more through the GUI than what *unix does.. but i again repeat..newbies don't need to know shell programming to start using *unix

From a beginner point of view that should be "totally" true; but when it comes to doing "some more",and there's no button, or you're in a hurry and have no time for having fun with the mouse, then they recall a scary you_tube post where people were talking about shell programming and commands and stuff like that :D;If anyone using Linux gets anything but curious when hearing "shell programming" they would actually get sacked in no time from a company that asks u to "know unix".w u t best of luck

see...you are again partially right... you call this behavior as being part of using linux for real... see don't get me wrong.. i am a CS nerd who is deep into shell programming and rarely use the GUI myself... the thing is.. beginners sometimes get scared off by this talk (learning shell programming for using *unix).. and we shouldn't be preaching shell programming at least here learning shell programming is good.. but you can get the work done without knowing it.. my Prof does :P Peace out!

what would u do if u want to replace the blank spaces in file names with _ ? I mean how long it would take u to do that manually, for every file on your disk... it should take u about 10 sec to write the command, than the computer would do the rest...yeah you could make a program to do that..but you would miss all the Unix essence. Of course you can use Linux ignoring that there is a Shell "thins" over there but what would u do when there is no program/button to do the job u want?

Haha, if you delete the Ubuntu Partition while on Vista then GRUB is still there, trust me, I got screwed from it. Luckily I figured it out. If you delete the Ubuntu Partition and GRUB won't let you start up, then put in your Windows Vista CD and type the following into the command prompt when you can... bootrec.exe_/fixmbr

If u delete the Linux partitions the boot manager Grub will disappear. Windows will run some disk repair tasks and that's it. Just install windows first and than linux. U can reuse the / partition to install the new Ubuntu version... make a /home for keeping personal info that would stay untouched when reinstalling...U should learn shell programming that will help u use linux for real...or at least some basic commands.. clicking it's not the way

You FAIL. The windows are looped. After the icons fly by (which just show already open programs) The windows start over again from the beginning. You only have about 30 or 40 programs running. This vid is total bullshit. And if you were using one of the ubuntu and friends distro they were all probably running slow as hell. Linux Sucks. The other day, both cores were spiked to 100%, by a background process that I didn't realize was running. I was SSH'd in, doing all kinds of stuff, and never even realized that both cores were spiked until I opened htop. It performed everything perfectly fine. I should make a video of that...

Eu, por exemplo, consigo jogar Counter-Strike 1.6 (e source), age of empires III, consigo executar o Microsoft Office e tenho conseguido executar tudo o que quero no meu Linux com bastante qualidade (raros problemas): Porém, os Sims 2 não funcionam. Perfeito. Fiquei aprisionado ao windows durante muito tempo, com o incrível medo de dar cabo do disco-rígido quando o fosse a instalar. Mas no dia em que o Windows Update começou a actualizar-se contra a minha permissão, decidi instalar o Ubuntu, Hoje é-me muito útil, para programar (muito melhor), e posso fazer tudo o que fazia antes, até mesmo jogar Counter-Strike:Source (com o Wine). Evidence says otherwise. Almost every non-nerd friend I have is favorably surprised when shown Ubuntu with its graphical effects and load of apps for everyday use. So much that Dell decided to sell a good chunk of its desktops and laptops with Ubuntu preinstalled. I do realize that Linux stills lack things in order to "win", but the current level of user friendliness, power and compatibility makes it enough for the average user. And that's a great achievement.

Apple has a patent on multi-touch. This is the future of mobility. MIDs will replace the cell phone. Imagine unlimited voice calls anywhere you have a connection (which is almost everywhere you have a cell connection now with a 3G connection) for $30 a year via Skype. The Carriers are in trouble.
