I knit both ways but am not a fan of continental knitting. Any experienced knitter does not throw the wool over as demonstrated. Looked like a beginner to me. The wool is hooked over the right index finger and ring finger keeps the tension. Where continental becomes more complicated is when you are attempting a variety of stitches rather than knit and purl. I find my continental is tighter not looser. Am just as fast using either method. I think you prefer whatever method you learn first.

A knitter am I now! -WOW! This crocheter thanks you gals loads for the clear instruction on continental knitting! I always shied away from knitting as that throw-over seemed like such a wasted amount of motion for each small stitch - Now, I'm knitting with ease and speed and can imagine the day when I'll be as proficient with 'kneedles' as I am with the hook! = : ) Thanks bunches from a fellow Grand Rapidsian!

For my second knitting project, I wanted to do a ribbed scarf. I knew it was going to be forever in the traditional method. With the continental method ribbing goes so quick and no problems with the yarn ! Had to watch the vidéo 3 times over to get the hang, and am still slightly heasentant with my fingers, but I'll have a scarf full to get comfortable.

Wow I think this looks like how my Nana used to knit & she was from Eastern Europe. It looked different than how I see other people knit know. Do you think they use the throwing or continental method in Ukraine? She showed me some knitting as a child, I've never been able re-learn it since. She is not here now, & I would love to knit in the style of my Nana. I would feel like I was doing her proud :-) Thanks for posting. What is the American style knitting called?

This is absolutely the best continental knitting video I've ever seen. Like many other people I've seen tons of instructions and none has ever been this clear. This is the only one I've seen that explains the correct way to hold the yarn, so add me to the list of people who can finally PURL easily. :D Not to mention in 10 minutes she showed every skill you need to know to knit pretty much anything. I hope Lorilee Beltman knows how helpful this is!

Thank you for the video, because usually I use Lion Brand's website on how to do specific stitches, but even with the pictures they post it is hard to understand exactly what you are supposed to do. I've never seen the knit stitch made that way, I've only seen the e=wrap st. At first I thought you had made a purl until I took a better look at it. Would love to see a sampler that showed the difference between the 'knit' st as you did it and the e-wrap.

Ribbing could be done this way- but because ribbing tends to be a slower knit overall- the time saving of not turning your work would be negligable. The only reason why I can imagine a person would knit ribbing in the back and forth method was to avoid repeat motion injury.

When I have all stockinette stitch I knit English from right to left, leave the yarn in my right hand and knit from left to right the other way (exactly as you did). Oh, I just HAVE to reply to this one. Once you have tried wearing socks from one of these machines, you won't go back to store-bought! They are custom fit, warm natural fibers, and wear like iron. My guys finally tried them. Now they will wear nothing else! The group of sock machine owners is growing rapidly. So is the price on these little jewels. I own about 15 of them of different makes and year models. I also occasionally have one available for adoption.

Dorret you are marvelous I have made my first sock with your tutoial help. I use a round needle for the straight part of the leg and the foot. Replacing the dpn when needed at the beginning , heal, and toes. you must know how much you are appreciated. That makes the rounds faster with markers where the separation belongs. I design my own patterns. The yellow sock is just an invetned number of stitches to get across the principles. The aim of the tutoiral was to show how you can control and understand the development of the individual parts of the sock and see actually how stragiht forward it is. I hope that it gives you a soild foundation first to follow a pattern successfully and then the confidence to adapt or patterns or design your own socks. Regards Dorret
