Tungsten carbide, from what I understand, gets 'splotches' and the metal becomes stained when a cobalt binder is used. Now 'days, jewelers and such only use nickel binders, which prevents this from happening. If you can find it, don't buy cobalt bound tungsten carbide, only get nickel.

well I work with tungsten carbide tooling bits every day. Tungsten isnt unbreakable. My job is to take a 24 oz. hammer and smash apart drill bits and and various tungsten carbide CNC bits as well as other various items. I break apart pieces the size of a 20 oz. bottle (solid) into pieces that are about a tenth the size of a grain of sand. I work for Buffalo Tungsten Inc. I know alot about the material and the various items tungsten and tungsten carbide are used for.

Blotches... not with mine... and as my oldest boy used to say.. shines like a diamond in a goats arse... :) I have had no issues except for wanting to buy another one to have a different style.. the one I got was shiny on the sides but brushed in the middle (i was worried that it wouldnt retain its shine) well i was wrong and wish i had brought the totally polished (shiny) one.. I was reading on E-Bay about the Tungsten Carbide and it said that it had Cobalt in it and that the Cobalt reacts with the skin and then blotches within a very short time period. There are times when a visor is not practical, eg driving a car, climbing a mountain or even peeling a potato. The visor I use has a hinge so it can be moved out of the way. I first starting using one when setting a curb link bracelet with 1 pointers, 4 per link pave set. I was able to get the same standard of detail that I was getting with larger stones. That is a great question! I wish I were at home b/c I would run some sheets and measure them for you. Unfortunately I'm away from home for a few weeks. I found a bit of info on the GlassAttic (.com) website. Go there and click on "P" and "pasta machines". On that page click the "Thicknesses & measuring" link. About 5 lines into the section it will address playing card thickness vs. a machine. I hope that helps!

You do not need to cover the silver with the baking soda; as long as the baking soda is dissolved in the water the reaction will work. Also, multiple washes are not necessary; just leave the silver in the solution longer and the reaction will continue to remove the tarnish.
