I found that the insurance system (mine was workers comp & sucked) and most of healthcare system is set up either for people who will get well in a short time, or people who are terminal-will be ill a long time then die. NOT for a person who can and will recover but it will take YEARS. If possible, you might have to move nearer to a place with more support for TBI :-( This country's healthcare non-system is horrible for TBI.

The extreme mood swings are something that can get much better in time. I struggled with the same thing myself, for first 3 years after injury. Think of an electrical appliance that has been smashed with many broken wires--running on low voltage some of the time, sparks & fire others. Over time the brain "rewires" itself and becomes more whole again but it takes a LONG TIME. The challenge is how to survive, keep the person & everyone else safe, and not go bankrupt, while waiting??

They only cover 2 neuro-psyc with in a one hour drive as providers. the reality of insurances and how they really are when you need them the most is eye opening. we have spent a lot of time trying loop holes myself.Angela had a wreck last Feb. the soc workers and docs have been very helpful. Another GREAT resource to understand brain injury -- the BBC has an interactive "brain map" site. Put in your internet browser: BBC brain map -- should hit it. For anger issues, use the brain map to look up "amygdala" and read. Fear, anger, anxiety etc are when amygdala is ACTIVE - to be happy, QUIET it. I hear lots of stories of people with TBI, and VERY typical to go thru angry stage when realizing "I lost myself, this is the best it will ever get." How did she get the TBI - some kind of accident? She use to go to the YMCA and fast walk. She gets violent with me when I take her now. we do take walks now just up the road. They adjusted her meds, but she still occasionally gets violent in the night time and sometimes cries out for help to other people like I am hurting her. We have gotten to know the local police too well she use to read a lot . now a couple of sentences drive her crazy. Lately she is down on herself, like she is just realizing that she is disabled. I am on duloxetine (Cymbalta) now for depression & overall body pain, and thyroid med - the gland that controls many body hormone levels is inside the head, one of the things that can be damaged. YES, it gets better in time but on the way there are ups & downs, and sometimes recovery feels agonizingly slow! She is awake and it is always in the afternoon or night. And the worse she is, the less likely she is to go to sleep at all( even with her night meds.she just got out of a hospital that did take her. she still has her moments, but they are not as long and less violent. when she wakes up she is the sweetest woman in the world. As the day goes on, she ramps up to the rage. pepper are you still taking a lot of meds now? Do you feel less overwhelmed than you did a year ago?

Does your wife do this as she is falling asleep (hynogogic), or as she is waking up (hypnopompic)? While doop is right and BI can trigger a mental health condition, please watch out that she doesn't get stuck with a diagnosis that is considered permanent, and then it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. I had symptoms you mention for 1-2 years post injury, then they went away on their own as my brain slowly healed, rewired. Best to you -

I hear you about the "get up and go." I am Anita, the first person you see in the film. For a long time, I was down on myself, thought I was lazy, for not being able to get things done like I could B4. The film implies I had voc rehab, but I didnt - workers comp would not approve. So I healed myself mainly with exercise - walking a little more each day, and easy yoga. Also had to learn, if I couldn't do something, try again 6 months or a year later. Don't give up. Keep trying! This is a good video and I appreciate it a lot. I had a TBI about 8 years ago. No-one really seems to believe me when I tell them that I don't have the "get up and go" that I used to have (along with a lot of other deficiencies). I used to love to exercise. Now I can't make myself do it. I have permanent short term memory problems, executive function problems, etc. I hate this brain injury.

I have to agree. It is very challenging trying to depect a TBI experience. Obviously, you are a TBI survivor. Would you have believed it if someone described it to you? I certainly wouldn't have. In my film, "RECLAIMING YOUR LIFE AFTER A TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY" I tried to film just the experience of going to the grocery store, it was a mind altered experience. An excellent video. I am a TBI survivor of 2 yrs. I didn't know this kind of info was available after my accident and trying to read a book required memory that at the time I just didn't have. I have suffered from three TBIs, and vetteqld is right on the money- living with it is not easy, in fact it IS a nightmare. A problem that is only now being looked at seriously by the medical field only because of the large number of servicemen/women coming back with it. And anyone with a TBI MUST watch their step very carefully, because as I found out first hand, entire communities can learn to hate or despise you simply because they do not understand, when really it's none of their business.

You are very correct with the observation that every BI presents a new range of variables. Its such complex tissue and our understanding of the components is very small. Bromocriptine, a dopamine agonist, will have the effect mentioned. My heart goes out to you cory, it such a difficult thing to live with, especiallysince the person you are with isnt the same person you met, you understanding of the condition however seems to be highly above that of the normal population, i admire your courage.

Thanks, she does frequent the doctors quite a bit. She of course has several other problems that go with it. A couple of days ago we went to the doctor and she believed that it was beeing on Bromocriptin too much, to long. I don't think that the doctors are always 100 % right all the time either. Especially with all of the different variables for different BI. wonder if you are right about the schiizophrenia. I never thought about it before. The doc said nothing about it too Thanks Doop

Generally, you can expect a period of spontaneous recovery for 3 months after a head injury. However, this "Dreaming out loud" sounds very much like auditory hallucination, the chief symptom of schizophrenia. Unfortunately brain insults increase the chance of developing mental illness, due to damage to the brain, or the reactive emotional issues. I suggest your report this behavior to a clinician. My wife does the thinking out loud also she does what I call dreaming out loud now, where she Talks on a phone that isn't there for example. Her thoughts are sometimes her reality. When i try to correct her she argues that it is real. She has the short term memory too. She sounds like she will go through the same. Her eye sight is good though. MVA 21 feb 2008 for her. The video gives very good info for those out there that do not have TBI. I myself am not TBI but my mother and my wife are both TBI survivors. It is a tough rode to go but with a little patience and time things really do get better. I belive that those with TBI are better off with the family and will recover alot better if they have their families help and push to do more each day. My wife and I have just had our 3rd little girl though Drs. said would never happen, belive and GOD will help!!!

I was snowboarding February 2006, ran into a tree, had a traumatic brain injury, was in a coma for 2 months and went back to college 3 months after I got out of the hospital on May 6. Yeah, wow. This video was made by my dad, Dr. Veteto.

Hey buddy you seem super cool and as a TBI survivor myself I am glad to have lived to see how your tbi changed you into an awesome person like mine has made mine better than the directioning it was heading. I am 20 now and I had it when I was ten. It takes ten years to recover fully or mostly but you can almost feel the head injury depart from your body at that tenth year and it's scary. I hope your therapy goes smooth and just remember to always keep your head up man.

Cody, after seeing your video i can tell that there si so much we can do with love, perseverance and faith. My friend was in a coma of 2 weeks after a terrible accident and even it happened 3 months ago, he is still at the hospital with severe brain damage. Your video revive my hopes for him, since he acts like a child, when he is 26, and doctors can't say much. 2, 4, 6 months, maybe even years will take for his complete recovery. Hey Cody, I am glad to see you have recovered as well as you have and in such a short period of time. I too sustained a TBI, but mine was in April back in '05. I'm fully functioning and I too was in a coma, although mine was only for a month. I just want to encourage you to keep on bettering your life with your second chance. I did a search for TBI and found your video. I had a TBI in october last year and it looked like your eyes were crossed while you were recovering, but it could have been the glare. If so, I was just wondering how long did it take for them to correct, because mine are still crossed and I was just hoping to get some input from another survivor. thats fucking gay i feel so bad for that guy that had to be the worst pain he has ever experienced in his life. that's the kind of pain that's almost indescribably unbearable. one time i slipped under a sharp wooden bench while running and got a serious bone bruise and cut that lasted for months. that hurt extremely bad so i can only imagine this guys pain. poor guy.

I'm sorry that you seem/are so worried about the birth of your child. True shoulder dystocia is rare, but positional dystocia where the cause is related to the mother's position ie. on her back is not uncommon. But it (pd)is easily remedied by adopting an upright birthing position ... as the baby is not truly 'stuck' in the pelvis, just needs you to maximise your pelvic outlet. Sadly, Caesarean section is not without its risks and so that is why good midwives really encourage vaginal birth.

legoheight I am so sorry. I've been the labor nurse at several shoulder dystocias. It is very scary for everyone involved. They've all turned out okay at the ones I have been at but you can easily see where it might not have if the midwife hadn't gotten in there and in one case had to do a lot of cutting of the perineum to get in there to maneuver the baby out. Us short nurses have to get up on the bed or on a stool to push down and do the suprapubic pressure. It has to be done quickly.

i have been doing some research as im due to have my 2nd daughter and i had shoulder dystocia with my first baby and apparently shoulder dystocia is very rare but in real life im not sure that is the case at all. im tempted to avoid all danger and push for a C-section but in NZ its extreamly difficult and a vaginal birth is always favoured and alot of the time forced beyond all safety.

Exaclty episotomy does nothing to prevent shoulder dystocia. And the actual cause of death would be the hypoxia, not from cord compression. But from the engorement of blood in the head. Prevention, would be keeping the mother mobile upright and drug free.
