Apauled: Campus Cram

Before Apauled, there was Campus Cram.
Campus Cram aired on College TV Network Zilo. This was the opening sequence used for the show. Looking back, the keyed graphic is unfortunate (a lesson for you kids) but overall I'm still very happy with the cut.

For me, the most impressive of all was Coe's run in LA 84, as each lap got faster & faster from the start. To run 3:32.5 in his 7th race in 9 days in that heat and humidity, to win so emphatically against the world's best (Aouita purposely chose to avoid both Coe & Cram!) with limited training due to ilness was phenomenal. His laps were 59.1, 57.9, 56.3, 39.2. Last 800m was 1:49.8, last 400 was 53.2, 200m in 25.7 and last 100m in 12.7. His last four 100m splits were 14.0, 13.5, 13.0 and 12.7!

Of course Coe's last 1200m wasn't as fast as Ryun's, but he would still have covered 1200m within the race in 2:47. In some respects its more difficult and less economical if the pace "chops & changes" within the race. Coe obviously finished a lot faster in the final 100m (1.0 sec) which shows there was a lot left had he needed it. Nevertheless Ryun's run is equally impressive. It was a shame that Ryun was never able to build on the form he showed in 66 & 67! A bit of a mystery really.

From the splits given in the "Milers" book, Ryun's splits were (in metres) 60.5, 55.9 (1:56.4), 57.4 (2:53.8) and 39.3. His last 1200m was 2:47.7 (not 2:46!) last 800m in 1:50.7, 400m in 53.6, 300m in 39.3 and last 100m in 13.5. The race I can think of which most corresponds with this is Coe's run in Zurich 84, only the first 2 laps were swapped round; his were 55.2, 60.8, 57.4 and 39.0 for 3:32.4. His last 800m was 1:50.7, 400 was 53.0, 200m was 25.6 and 100m was 12.5!

I have a book entitled "The Milers" by Cordner Nelson and published by T&FN. It quotes: " It was hot down on the floor of the Coliseum, but the track had been resurfaced and it seemed fast." Yes it was cinders, but it would have been in perfect order, and as Peter Matthews said to me, an immaculately kept cinder or grass track wouldn't have been much slower than a synthetic one used in the early '80's; perhaps Ryun's run would have been worth between 3:31.1 and 3:32.1; still incredible!

I disagree! Cram was always at his best when out in front from 400 or 300m out. If he was behind the big guys like Coe or Aouita going in to the last 200m he seldom won. Ryun was a freak, yes, but his exploits have been much exaggerated. I have had this conversation several times on T&FN. The problem is that most of the marks on the collegiate tracks back in the '60's were in yards rather than metres, and this has resulted in errors when quoting split times.
By: franknjess. on 31 Oct 08, 21:23:53
Aoutia had a target in Cram. Had Cram been chasing someone he'd have run faster. Anyone who's run races knows what this is like. On another note I think people get freaked out when reading about Jim Ryun's splits in some races, they can't believe he could finish so fast, back in the days of dirt tracks. But he was a freak. My father was an official, and was one of the timers back when Ryun set his 1500 record. His last 1200 was 2:46, on dirt, and the track temperature over 100 degrees F. Freak.

Always felt a bit sorry fir Crammie that he did not get the Olympic gold his talent surely deserved. Too young in Moscow, only half fit in LA, and cruelly injured just weeks before Seoul after looking a dead cert in what was a relatively week final for me.
By: oldjoe5. on 03 Aug 08, 14:35:10
Clearly a real possibility that any track great from the 1970s on may have been using. Maybe the odds that Lewis used is greater than those that say Ovett did, but who really knows?
By: deano27671. on 03 Aug 08, 14:31:02
Despite the fact it came out last year from USAT&F that he tested positive for 4 banned substances in 1988? They never let it be known at the time and believed his story about being on different medication. Sounds a bit hypercritical to me what with subsequent events that transpired in Seoul. I have to say it has tinted my admiration for the man.
By: deano27671. on 03 Aug 08, 14:25:54
Yes I agree with you in the respect that he was unique. I also think it's a shame that today's milers don't double up with the 800m. I don't think today's guys are as good as the likes of Coe, Ovett, Aouita, Cram etc. Those were the good old days!
By: oldjoe5. on 03 Aug 08, 14:24:34
All these guys are all time greats. Yet some had greater careers than others. As a fan of middle distance, I hate to say it but Carl Lewis is the king of all.
By: oldjoe5. on 03 Aug 08, 14:21:47
Look at it this way. Nobody can be compared to Aouita given his unparalled range. But Ovett can be compared with Coe, can be compared with Cram. Aouita's uniqueness sets him apart. It is too bad that the top milers over the past two decades have not tried to also compete seriously at the 800. That seemed to die with the end of the English reign of the late 70s thru the 80s
By: deano27671. on 03 Aug 08, 14:21:15
Yes, but both Bubka and Lewis are all time greats! The fact that they competed in different events mean that it really is almost impossible to say who was the greater! Michael Johnson only competed in 2 events, but he won far more medals than did Aouita. Does that mean he isn't as great as Aouita because he didn't run more events?
By: deano27671. on 03 Aug 08, 14:17:13
Yes, but it wasn't the 11.9 that some claimed at the time. It was 13.1. Looked faster because Cram slowed to 13.6. Coe ran 12.5 in the last 100 in his 3:32 Zurich win the previous year. Look, we can argue for ages. I think Auita's range was unparalleled and for that he is one of the greatest athletes of all time, but that doesn't put him above Coe, Ovett & Cram; especially the former 2. He is their equal but not their better, just because he ran more events in my honest opinion! :0)
By: oldjoe5. on 03 Aug 08, 14:05:21
Did U see Said's speed at the close of the race in this video?
By: oldjoe5. on 03 Aug 08, 14:04:24
Bubka was more dominant in the pole vault than was Carl Lewis in any one event (well, maybe not the long jump), but Carl was the greater due to the number of events he excelled in. (also the pole vault just is not as important as running and jumping). Coe's greatness in the 800,1500, especially the 1500, is not at question. But Aouita's unparalleled range sets him apart. 800 to 10,000 is just unheard of.
By: deano27671. on 03 Aug 08, 14:03:20
When Mel Watman published his all time lists in AW in 2006; the criteria for which I don't totally agree with; Coe was ranked 3rd all time athlete at 800m AND at 1500m. Aouita was not on the 800m list, but he wasn't in the top 10 at 1500 or 10k either. He was ranked no.2 at 5k behind Nurmi. Aouita is certainly on my list of "all time greatest athletes", but he tended to try his hand at many things and only really specialised at 5000m. In terms of depth, Coe achieved more at 2 Olympic distances.
By: deano27671. on 03 Aug 08, 13:56:47
No Snell never held the 1500m record. Btw they never had rankings for 3000m as far as I'm aware! I also don't understand your criteria for "all time great". Coe was an 800/1500m runner and was the most successful at those 2 distances than any other athlete in history. Why should not running a 5000m race have any bearing on this? One wouldn't deny Bubka being an all time great because he never competed in the high jump, or Juantorena because he never ran 1500m!
By: deano27671. on 03 Aug 08, 13:49:15
Afterwards, he confessed that he did a 5K pace session at 13:20 speed each week. I ventured the opinion that he could run a good 5K anytime. He agreed, but said he didn't like the event! It is doubtful whether any 800m runner before or since could have completed such a session in such times." Also, don't forget that Coe was a member of the UK 4 x 400m relay squad between 79 & 81, running 45.5. Aouita never had that natural basic speed.
