yee-zching (donlt know Wade Giles for Ching, but NOT english "ch" sound). Easier to use three coins, per example in the Wilhelm book. Any three identical coins will do. Throw them down (any way you want), and add the total: three points for tails, 2 points for even, and add. That's the number for this partucular throw (9 and 7 unbroken, 9 moves: 6 and 8 broken, 6 moves). Throw six times, write resulting number each time in ascending column. Look up from there.

It all depends on the school you are from. This school, in the Yang tradition, was not about boasting and fighting. True to the philosophy of the Tao, their approach to practice was one of humility. I don't think Cheng Man Ching pursued fame and I believe what this man said about him: he was never beat. Other forms of martial arts are about aquiring status by earning belts. This form of tai chi was not about that at all. So if you were looking for "show" you might leave disappointed.

I don't want to start a war on who is real, and I respect Cheng, but... There is a film of Gin Soon Chu pushing on You Tube. He's a deciple of Yang Sau Chung. That's Yang Cheng Fu's oldest son. That "freezing Chi" hurts like hell, and is very disturbing. He is the real deal. Also grabbing hold of one of O Sensei's Uchi Deshi was more like grabbing a cat 5 hurricane. The I ching is not the oldest system...the Ifa' divinatory is the olders system. it comes from the YORUBA people and utilizes a binary system consisting of 256 oddus or combinations. I'ching is but an extension of IFA'. 64x4=256... Ifa' is believed to be over 7,000 yrs old. There is a supposed legend that the Deity, Obatala'-Ayaguna, a warrior deity traveled to the east and contributed, if not, introduced the I'ching. Very interesting indeed!

I use the I-Ching in cloudy situations. Once i was envolved in a particular case and at some point i didn't understand anymore what was going on. I decided to rely on the advice of the I-Ching. The case went on for ten months in which i counceled the I-Ching many many times, always acting according to the instructions. I never understood what was going on all the time and i still don't, but i came out of the situation completely undamaged and i made a lot of people happy. I moved on unhindered

I think he was just referring to the view of taiji in the eyes of the public, yes there are amazing teachers still out there, but they are few and far between, you end up with a lot of airy fairy practitioners who think they know how to fight after doing the form and some push hands and they end up getting hurt, or further discounting taiji to the martial community

You're right, nobody is truly "unbeatable," in the classic sense, but wouldn't you agree that a man who doesn't fight is "unbeatable" simply because you can't beat someone unless you fight them? I think Tai Chi is better than MMA for true defense because Tai Chi makes you slippery like a snake. MMA uses strength and skill, something that won't help if you grab a serpent by the tail. Tai Chi teaches you to be like the snake and to be like water, elusive, slippery, changeable.

I think you don't understand it.. How do you want to fight with 76 years old? if you want to fight then start Karate, Jiu Jitsu, Judo or anything else.. But if you want to feel better with you and practising an art when you're very old then start with tai chi or chi kung.

Chen Manching and Fu Zhongwen had the same sifu, Yang Chengfu. But if you compare how they do the form you will find a lot of differences. Even Chengfu's son,Zhenduo, does it differently than his father. Tai chi is an art, and all sifus interpret it differently. As long as the essentials are understood and followed the form can be played with subtle variences. The same way music will be interpreted differently by various musiciens. Beginners and intermediate though should try to copy their sifu.
