Well, considering Christmas originally was a pagan holiday and the majority of the traditions are pagan traditions, there is no reason a family can not celebrate christmas without the christianity aspect of it. ;) That's how my family does it, same with many other families I know :)

qmort, so what do you tell them at christmas? Sorry kids, no presents for you. It is just a normal day and the whole world is deceived. What happens when they ask other kids at school, and come home to ask you why you beleieve differently. You going to indoctrinate them in your belief? You had a choice - where is theirs ? - or have you decided to force atheism down their throats. They love you and trust you. If you love them , let them be free to decide. I did that with my kids.

Religious people often use religion to help themselves, sure, but also to hurt others. I was hurt greatly by religion, having it forced down my throat at a young age. It took me many years to escape the mental and emotional abuse it amounted to. When I saw myself beginning to do the same thing to my own children, I finally saw the great harm in religion, and threw all our bibles in the garbage where they belong.

That doesn't mean religions are right, however. It also doesn't mean that religions are always a helpful thing, since on a global scale, religions are a negative influence on us all. Why can't people just treat each other decently without the fear of an angry god being wielded all the time?
