I think people are trying to dig too deeply into this whole thing. Don't make something out of nothing. They're close friends. Probably more so ashley with vanessa, and that is why zac gets along with her so well.

theyre like brother and sister. my brother's best friend is like my second brother and we act just like ashley and zac do. like we bug each other and stuff but its nothing more than a brother/sister relationship. and thats how i act with my brother too. it doesnt mean theyre flirting and in love.
