I was listening to an Emerson Lake and Palmer midi file, after listening to the real thing, and looking for an orchestral version of Karn Evil 9. That got me thinking about midi visualizations and the programs that convert whistling and humming into midi files and music notation. Nice video Chris, the Midi Jam program looks very interesting. I find it amusing that people knock midi when so much of what we listen to on mp3's etc. these days is played on midi instruments.

What a fool. MIDI is very complex. You don't know what you are talking about. Midi is just as complex as wave. Midi can be tweaked with out damaging the sound quality. Wave, on the other hand cannot. Midi notes are either from synths or sampled from real instruments or voices. Educate your self before you start talking. Damn, you even look annoying.

Start using soundfonts. Buy an old creative Live! or audigy card (with EMU10K1 soundprocessor), load it with soundfonts (I recommend Merlin and Airfont340) and have your MIDI-files really come alive. Sounds much better then Midijam and a hell of a lot better thant the standard Windows GM-mapping.

I absolutely love MIDI too provided it flows through a "physical" midi sequencer/synthesizer. Still not a fan of softsynths running on pc's (mac's). The "hardware" engineers who devised the specification decades back were dealing with a wire which had a narrow bandwidth so file size had to kept to a minimum. MIDI can be used to control many studio audio recorders & stage lighting systems.

No big deal.... you can pretty easily create that kind of application with sodtware like max/msp and jitter. Looks pretty cool, though. And by the way, midi can be use to create much more complex music, using real orchestral samples for example.

I have had experience with windows mobile devices, blackberries and the iPhone. While the iPhone is the most fun to use I find that Blackberries are still the quintessential business devices. Their emailing capabilities are unsurpassed and no touch screen will ever match the data entry capabilities offered by a full qwerty keyboard.

well put... this whole vid is more so a bash on the "Touch" than anything else. Describing the use of the "Touch" he just sounds ignorant to common sense... That said, the touch isn't as user/bizz friendly as most WM5/6 devices... I would say it is more likely that he had been using the iphone for 6 months and then just expected the touch work the same.

I did notice chrome was fast, and I do like how it is run more like a web browsing kind of o.s that has individual processes, nice idea. But firefox crashes so irregularly infact I dont remember it doing so (except not responding for 5 seconds), and its just nicer to use and is pretty dam fast too imho. I watched a video regarding Chrome, with representives from google 'outlining' all of chromes wonderful features and how theres a lot more going on than meets the eye how it uses a lot of new technologies etc etc. Wether I use a piece of software often depends on not only its capabilities, but simply how it feels to use. A car can do 0 - 60 in 5 seconds and has a loud sound system but its because some kid souped it up and it feels awful to drive, im not gonna buy it.

Amy, I've had one since it came out in Feb '08, it travels everywhere is is a VERY solid laptop. No flex and is light enough to be carried in most anything but if you abuse it of course it will go to crap, like any computer. I use it as a secondary machine and it fits that role perfectly.

I happen to be a big fan of Joy Electric (google them, really!!!) and they employ actual analog synth in their music. This thing is the cheapest thing that can mimic the performance of analog synth. I also would be interested to use it as a cheap drum machine. Good pick Chris!!

I work with Cubase and have Access Virus Snow, Korg Triton, M-Audio Axiom, a shitload of vst plugins and so forth... I don't want to brag about the stuff I got but you don't know me. Not so true. In fact, it is safe to say that more mac users know more about computer than pc users do, overal. Most Mac users did at one time use windows. Its not about being dumb or smart. also, i have never had alot of money to spend on a computer. i really need value and it apple ever comes out with a computer that has any kind of value i'd buy it. and probably install the 50 million OSs i have now on it. the problem is that apple thinks that their OS alone is worth the high price. the problem is, its not (depending on what you need, this applies to me but may not to you). even if i had $1500 for a half decent mac id just spend it on a extremely high end laptop.

i was originally a mac guy but when xp came out i knew i could never EVER use a mac while xp is mainstream and be satisfied. do my next computer was a dell dimension 2400 and the hardware was so high quality i inadvertently became a dell fan. more importantly i have always been an early adopter of new stuff and i hate it when ppl say windows vista aint that good. the truth is its a great os, u just have to spend actual money on ur hardware and actual time learning it. its a phenominal OS, really

It would have been about 7 years ago that I got my PC, bog standard package, I have spent only AU$200 on upgrades, they were second hand components and I can play Crysis on medium settings, this is something I can aspire to as the game is heavily system intensive, this is where cheap hardware is good, I am sitting down the bottom of the upgrade chain, I am getting cheap hardware that probably got sold on way too soon.

I agree with you here, it is a lot easier to upgrade a PC than a Mac as all you have to do is unscrew the side of the case and slot in your new component, while, I saw my sister's broken DVD drive being replaced by the Mac repairman, he had to unscrew the back of the monitor, take out several components before he could put in the replacement DVD drive.

I'm a Windows user for the games that are available, now while, there are games starting to be made for the Mac OS, the selection/range that is available for Windows far outnumbers those available for Mac.
