the kids at my school that run sub 1:55s are going into their senior year but this year they are training to break 1:50, but they are better cross country runners

Try to run germanish intervall. Run 200meters in the average speed you want in your 800meter, jogging 100meyer after each run. Thats how i trained, and when i was 12 i ran 2:30, when i was 13 i ran 2:11.

How old are they?

In other words a sprint is any race where one runs as fast as they're capable the whole way, even if that means breaking up the race into discrete segments and coming up with a strategy to achieve the fastest result. And running begins once one alters their strategy in relationship to the strategy of the other runners, attempting to tactically out maneuver them, e.g. out kicking them or wearing them down to mitigate their kick. It seems to me that the demarcation between the two is the 800m.

I am not saying that the 800m isn't run nearly as fast as a sprint, I am arguing that the conceptual difference concerns the point where tactics come into play. And there are no tactics in a 400m sprint. There is a strategy in how to run it fastest (concerning 100m splits), but there is no concern regarding the other runner's strategy. One simply tries to run the 400m as fast as they can regardless of how fast anyone else is running it.

Thats obvious but what I meant was in terms of speed the 800 is like a sprint. Wilson Kipketers first 400 was 48.10. How many people do you know who can run even a quarter of that; the 100m, at the same speed? Bottom line is yes they are not sprinting but if you look at their speed you will see that barely anyone can even run a very short distance at the same pace that they did for the 800m. Also, tactics are a factor in sprinting; have you ever watched a 400m race before?

Are you appealing to empiricism? Well then instead of being flippantly curt why don't show how that argument rebuts my criteria that sprinting stops and running begins when tactics become a factor in the race.

training with your team usually wont help you that much. you have to run outside the box to get better. try lifting and running with better people.

train your butt off and do the gamut of exercise types. Do lots of long distance to build up lung capacity and sprinkle that in with some sprint work to tune up your explosive muscles. Try to do some sprints under duress, so that you're going full speed out of breath, to simulate what you'll be feeling for the last 200 meters of the race.

not even close
By: nod92. on 15 Oct 08, 02:30:34
I think that is very impressing for not running at all, i guess if u train hard running with like someone who knows what they are doing you will get significantly better, but ur already 22 so the times you would have to run would be pretty crazy, cuz like there are kids at my high school that run 1:54
By: Roshibear. on 30 Sep 08, 16:45:29
Based on what criteria?
By: Obie013. on 30 Sep 08, 14:31:41
Not really. Right now the mile is practically a sprint.

That announcer pissed me off. The 800 isn't an "extended sprint". One doesn't use sprint and tactics in the same breath. All sprints are races run independently of what your competitors are doing. Their might be strategies involved in say the 400 meter sprint, but this concerns only how one can run their own fastest race. When you start thinking about tactics and therefore what other runners are doing, you are no longer sprinting.
