Ok you just showed you don't know shit. The role of Rossini's Otelli lays in spinto tenor range and has quite a bunch of low A's and doesn't have notes written above high C, in fact, most peak at Bb. I got the score if you actually wanna take a look at it. The role that is for a light tenor is Iago, not Otello...that's why when Guiditta Pasta and Malibran sang it as contraltos they simply sang it an octave down because it was already low for a tenor!
By: willthrillws. on 14 Nov 08, 16:21:39
You mean Verdi's Otello. Rossini's Otello is for a light tenor. And Verdi's Otello is not an example of bel canto.

but Pavarotti's voice was much more stable than Carreras's
By: agnellodei. on 11 Oct 08, 08:29:53
1> - Yes, I am living proof of that. 2> He wasn't pure bel canto, he was more of a modern tenor technique, his bel canto aspects were related to legatto and passagio transition. 3> Modern tenors do not use bel canto method, but Domingo certainly did in his early years, he was able to sing coloratura quite well.
By: agnellodei. on 11 Oct 08, 08:27:16
Well, certain bel canto tenor roles are baritonal such as Rossini's Otello.
By: vickersman. on 29 Sep 08, 23:49:54
Perfectly fair and intelligent question. The story line carried by the tenor usually involves a love battle for the soprano. While baritones certainly have the capacity to sing beautifully, the real love duets involve the tenor and soprano-just the way it is I guess...there are exceptions of course.hope this helps
By: taternut. on 27 Sep 08, 21:22:02
This is just a question from an aspiring singer...(don't yell at me please...(How come when people thing of bel canto they never thing of any baritones. do baritones not have something that high voices have)
By: ilbacioditosca. on 14 Sep 08, 21:38:20
Question 1 and 2 are a logical excercise, the 3 is ironic, because Carreras Legato was and is better than Pavarotti, and Domingo voice had and has a palette of colours that Pavarotti never had, of course Pavarotti technical security and focus as a tenor is better than Domingo but the singer has some musical challenges where Domingo is much better than Pavarotti.
By: jenni4claire. on 09 Sep 08, 11:06:17
Perhaps I am mistaken in my impression of him.I was first struck by it watching the tributes paid to Pavarotti after his death, and he seemed so begrudging in his praise, in the context. I know RB was always said to be a Svengali without which we would not have Joan Sutherland as we know her. Obviously he is a talented man at what he does. Perhaps I am projecting: who would NOT want to sing like these performers?

What video series did these come from. I want to purchase them myself. Please advise.
By: chameens. on 01 Sep 08, 19:07:29
What sets theses singers apart, apart from intelligence and fine musicianship, is the fact that they having extraordinary natural high placement of the tone which, most likely, leads to their amazing breath. Each of them speaks "high" in placement which was probably natural for them.
By: donerlich. on 31 Aug 08, 05:58:10
Interesting excercise that one that prevents weight coming up from below, I've got huge problem with that as I have a high tenor voice that hates going low and therefore I overcompensate and sing too hard, and then bring it back into the higher register when I come back up, which pretty much kills you in a long aria.
By: 33blueberries. on 27 Aug 08, 19:38:33
Really? Of all the interviews with Bonynge I've seen, I never got a sense of envy from him. He was first a pianist, and quite a fine one at that. He just seems to have a gift that suits one particular kind of work, and so he does that work with consummate brilliance. Maybe that's just my impression. He seems to have an idea of sounds and methods that Sutherland, with her unsurpassed mastery of breath management, could most fruitfully practice. The two were well matched.

Hear, hear.
By: Willzito. on 25 Aug 08, 03:18:02
Somethings i don't get: 1)If a terrible singer learn BEL CANTO, it means she would be a terrific singer? 2)If Pavarotti hasn't used BEL CANTO, still his voice would be marvelous? 3)If BEL CANTO is such a incredible thing, why tenors like Domingos, Carreras or Bocelli don't use it?
By: soundfond. on 24 Aug 08, 15:22:46
Hi vickersman you're right I had been missing Jon Vickers on my list. His is the rarest of the tenors, extremely powerful sound that he used with ultimate mastery and manner. Thank you so much for the friendly reminder!

seems like marilyn Horne wanted to hog the show just a bit.. -_- *sigh* I wanted to hear more of joan and pav than her, but oh well

Thank u so much..I'll try to find this song =) I keep trying to vocalize just for fun Angiol di pace.... heheheh
By: lojundolo. on 12 Aug 08, 20:30:22
That is "Angiol di pace all'anima" a terzetto for tenor, soprano and mezzo from BEATRICE DI TENDA by Bellini. They sang it live at Lincoln Center, New York, in a very famous concert in 1981, and I think that it could be the same day or days of this video recording. There are a lot of parts of that live-concert on YouTube, in video.

I checked out your bio page with the "list", of the world's greatest opera singers and noticed that Jon Vickers was not on it-(unless it was and I missed it).Perhaps you can add his name, and thus make that list definitive, because without it, the "list" is without one of the gtreatest tenors in operatic history.I was so fortunate to sing with him in Tristan (chorus)I still remember how I felt when he opened up that massive instrument and then how so softly he could sing the love duet.
