this guy has just been totally predicted wrong as now the samsung NC10 is here every thing he said isnt possible to do on them now is on the samsung (download music, play music, play games and with its massive ram and memory disc drive can also run quite large programs) if not get a portable hard drive it will still work out cheaper lol the only bad side is there is no disc tray but still you can pich one up for about £20 so there is nothing left to compare realy. LMAO

Also, he states a netbook cannot download music, play videos, or use Photoshop... What utter bollocks. I use my netbook for torrents and it works fine. Photoshop/GIMP, no worries. Playing videos... well i just watched a HD video without any hassle. once again, this guy needs to wiseup.

I couldn't stomach watching all of this video. This guy clearly knows nothing about portable computing. I own a EEEPC 1000H and it can run 90% of the apps a larger laptop can. The only thing netbooks cannot do are modern games, but nobody buys a netbook for gaming!! This guy needs to get a clue and stop spreading crap about netbooks.

I'm going to look into these. I'd like to use a netbook with linux.
By: kevlarian. on 03 Dec 08, 06:44:30
The netbook IS A LAPTOP without the weight, or a CD/DVD drive. All the latest have reall HDD (mine has a 160GB) and many now come with EVERYTHING else (including EVDO wireless, Bluetooth, a/b/g/n networking, and 10/100/1000 LAN). They are small for sure, but that doesn't make them "sub par" to a "laptop" Is a Honda FIT (very small car) not a CAR becuase it is smaller than a Chevy Impala? Nope it is a car, just for a different purpose ;)

I run eclipse (ganymede), visual studio 05, and mysql on my NC10. Dual boot with XP and Ubuntu. Got tired of lugging around my 14" laptop in its own case- not so much the weight, but the dimensions. The Samsung is small enough that I can just throw it in my messenger bag and forget about it. It's GREAT.

omg, aspire one 150 is almost a laptop, I have seen them running WoW, w3, guild wars, counter strike, gta3, halo and spore!! It can run games what it can't do is running lastgen games.

you aren't giving enough credit to the netbook in my opinion, netbook can do more than your basic "net-centric" stuff

thanks for this vid.

Little problem...netbooks almost never get a CD/DVD drive.
By: LuckyNibb. on 01 Dec 08, 06:29:45
But it's still very possible to do all the stuff he said you can't do. Even with the basic 512mb the Aspire One comes with and running Linpus Linux, you can run Gimp (open source photoshop lookalike), some older fps games run smoothly on it too with little noise, and wtf? How can't you download music? Saving from your browser still works, recording your live wave device works, frostwire and limewire work with linux. Sure you usually live in the web browser regardless, but the option is there.

By: WiiLittleRobert. on 30 Nov 08, 19:09:23
they make the acer aspire with a 120 and 160GB hard drive now, so wouldn't that mean that it's software installation capabilites would be decent?
By: tvlampe. on 30 Nov 08, 17:37:44

What about running eclipse or other programming applications like that, on a netbook?
By: Reknaw133. on 29 Nov 08, 18:03:23
Then the next problem is storage space. An 8GB one wouldn't rock at all for movies, but an external hdd from a laptop would power off the USB hub perfect and provide you with more space, some of these I see with 80GB-120GB drives. The difference is a laptop is more of a desktop replacement than a netbook. For performace, games, all day use, then a laptop is better but for the internet, a couple of movies on the train/plane - a netbook is a wise choice.
By: Reknaw133. on 29 Nov 08, 18:03:12
I wouldn't bother running Vista on one, you would get better performance with XP/Linux. I doubt photoshop would run smoothly unless you use an alternative photo editor. You don't get an optical drive to save space, power and cost, you don't really 'need' one and if you do you can get an external one. Most people rip/download thier movies to thier computer that is an .avi file with XviD/DviX codecs and probably about 352p in quality - that would run perfect on a netbook.
By: Reknaw133. on 29 Nov 08, 18:00:48
Netbooks are awesome, the screen isn't big because they are suppose to draw little power and be more portable. Netbooks aren't designed for games, but alot of laptops aren't either unless you wanna pay. For hard games, a computer is the most obvious option BUT if you are willing to go a little old school (q3, half life, cs 1.6, utx, emus) then you'll have a beast of a system.

Watch this video from 3:20, this guy makes out you can't 'use photoshop, download music and watch videos'
By: ruokcu2. on 29 Nov 08, 05:20:18
Researching the web I came up this this. This guy is not upto date. There is a Netbook with DVD-RW but its very expenvive, sony. The HD 1000 is bad news to run other apps. on. Because it has 2 hard drives one small fast only enough room for XP. and the the second drive too slow for apps. In u tube search "Netbook Photoshop" and games all running excellent.

Can anyone answer my question? I'm considering buying a samsung nc 10 netbook but I need to have word processor on it. The guy in this video said word is not one of the programs you'd put on this. Is this true or is it ok to put word? I plan on storing any movies or music on an external hard drive and only using this to write papers or surf the web.

fucking shit stupid bastard... go to school! I have one netbook and I do all that I want, even see porno movies!
By: ConstantC4. on 27 Nov 08, 22:29:26
netbooks have too small keyboards , keys less then 1.5 or 2 cm^2 are too small for adult men and most women. otherwise I would get one for coding notebooks have aproblem they got big CPUS but it's loud like a hair fan if you use it on max (breaks of overheat if not cleaned every year) next big thing is portable desktops forget slim 6 inch thick cases wcooled with replacable monitors motherboards and everything , like a pc , and no internal battaries and yeah no weight limit 20kg is ok too
