The only thing I'm not in total agreement with is the difference between cinders and synthetic. I think 2 secs is perhaps slightly over generous. I have read in several publications that it is about 0.5 per lap and when discussing it with Peter Matthews, he too told me that for 800m, the difference is c. 1.0 secs. But I guess it depends on the quality of both!?

I knew they are better now than in the 80's, but I wasn't sure of the timescale and the exact technical developments. So many thanks! I certainly concur with your comments on Coe, though I think he was capable of sub 1:41 even without the changes in the tracks.

not by any means im i 100% accurate, but merely giving a general idea. i have the highest regard for the currant 800m wr holder, i was just pointing out that coes 800wr would be worth a lot more if ran in modern times regardless of pacemakers, vitamin supplements, benefit of modern training and dietary programs, but just merely on the track surface which he ran on. which i have explained in detail. when he ran in 81 he even wasn't at his peak age. The next major development for middle/distance races happened from 96+. before that the tracks were harder sprint orientated, but from 96/97 on the european circuit, there were new softer tracks, rather than the hard under layer, they were using new softer under layer, helping all middle distance runners. A 800m runner running 145.15would be worth 144.85 a improvement of 0.2(est).

into the 50s tracks were made of cinders. when the first proper modern synthetic track was introduced in late 60s (polyurethane/tartan tracks) this gave a greater bounce(higher % return of energy) meaning that any runner who ran on a 146.xx on the cinder track would be worth a 144.xx for the 800m, if ran on a late 60s synthetic track. That's regardless of training methods vitamin supplements or any other factor.

Perhaps you're right about blood doping being more dangerous, but I have read lots to suggest that EPO's "athletic" benefits outweigh those of doping in the 70's/80's; which wasn't actually made illegal until 1986. Also Ceplak seemed to gain a benefit through using EPO on her 800m performances. I agree that the benefits are more obvious at longer events, but perhaps there is some effect even at 800m, which still requires some aerobic training.

In Bile's World Champs win in 87 and EL G's Olympic win in '04, both were actually slowing down over the last 200m and ran outside 13.0 secs in the final home straight! I do realise that the 3 runs can't be compared solely on that fact, and that EL G and Bile ran their last 800m quicker at 1:46.9, but I think it does show that Coe's performance was as good(and better than most) as anything achieved subsequently in a major championship race.

His last 800m was 1:48.6, though the real change in speed didn't occur until the 800m mark (700m from home), when Straub "dug in". Coe's last 700m was 1:33.2, which is 1:46.5 800m pace. Moreover, each successive 100m from that point onwards got faster, and the fact that Coe was still able to run the last 100m in 12.1 underlines the fact that he could have run the overall last 700m faster still had he needed to.

I rekon valentino rossi would have beaten the lap times, would have been hilarious if they had him riding the bikes as we all know he could beat it. This video goes to prove that with more and more powerful bikes, we actually cant get much more time out of them unless it has fast straights. Also not to mention what tyres the other bikes had on them. I ride an old ducati 900ss and on the road i can keep with most things in the twisties and that is where the fun is. The rider makes the difference.

This test is flawed. You need practise laps to get used to the bike, then ideally get some real lap times out and from there work out the standard deviations. Then you get a real measure of the real capabilities. Plus the tester could be biased against a make (i.e. not push hard), so a real test would involved disguising the fairing and chassis too..

No solo en atletismo. Ahora mismo no recuerdo un logro superior en cualquier deporte de un español. El atletismo es el deporte rey dentro del evento deportivo mas importante: los Juegos Olimpicos. Good stuff Steve, but from what I heard about Rockford Fosgate.They have pretty decent amps, but their subs are not that great. Didn't they own 5 other companies at one time like Lightning Audio? When it came time to update their products for '09, they had to pour their money into 5 different brands, which meant that all those brands couldn't have the best quality, because ot wouldn't be cost-effective.
