F3K- radio control DLG- discus launch glider. These guys know about thermals! cheers
By: richardf1b. on 11 Nov 08, 10:08:57
Indeed. But DLG is a Freeflight class if im right. They need just like f1b the thermal to stay up.

With the HUGE exception of rc sailplane pilots, who learn about thermal activity, aerodynamics, lift, airfoils, wingloading, etc.. piloting in/out of them, riding lift as the thermals change, chasing out of sink, riding the next thermal wave, etc.. A good DLG pilot being some of the best pilots for reading the weather. great vid- beautiful.

Wow. Beautiful. Love the hobby, love the plane. Beautifully done video. i wish more people were into this. It's very hard to do alone.

I agree. Those who fly powered RC usually have no clue about what's going on above their heads. Having started out in FF I "get it" regarding the utter beauty of the sport, and the magic of watching a well designed plane react to changes in air. The technological advances in materials, aerodynamics and airframe design in FF far outpace most of what's done in RC. That's why I like to blend the two together. In fact, many of those involved in state of the art micro RC are indoor FF'ers.

rc modelers have often no idea about thermal, aerodinamics, lift etc. They know how to steer a plane, some ones really incredible talented, but thats it. They just cant understand that a plane like f1b can fly without rc and dont see the joy of it. I hope you get my point, that "the best of all NO RC" isnt meant like freeflighyt is beter or something like that, but making clear there ISNT rc on board. ow and chasing the planes is indeed one of the lamest things of the hobby ;)

Beautiful video. I never mastered (or even became competent at) F1b. I moved from free flight to electric rc while integrating the high-tech materials and design aspects of various FF classes. I know, RC is anathema to FF, but I think cooperation and cross breeding between the two can only help perpetuate FF. And I hate chasing planes!

Excellent and very stylishly edited. Good not to have too much blaring and inappropriate pop music too! A few more like this on the other FAI classes would be good to see. As you say,"Best of all - no radio control"! I think it's very important to explain to the public that these aircraft do not NEED R/C to fly the way we want, - they do so automatically without the need for any outside interference. Well done. Good flying and lots of thermals, just upwind of me please!
