Posted by: redwolf6969
Video duration: 241 seconds
A recording of the infamous frozen peas commercial involving Orson Welles.
Struggling to fathom the copy he's being directed to read, he loses his patience and finally walks out.

I must admit I saw the episode of Pinky and the Brain (or was it animaniacs?) where pretty much of this dialogue was used, I had NO IDEA there was a factual basis for it. OMFG I laughed my ass off! This is just as funny as P & the B doing it.

I gotta admit, a commercial describing how some cowboy is "chopping up the finest prairie fed beef" with a bloody axe does not make me want to buy anything. Did this thing ever actually get made?

When you're a genius and you have to work stupid projects run by dumbasses, you'll understand where he's at.

It's like when you write a paper - you have to transition between paragraphs and ideas in general. You can't just say, "I woke up one day. My cat was on fire". You have to elaborate on what happened in the middle. Same thing here - Orson is complaining that we're talking about the farm and then without transitioning to the field we're already talking about peas. It's just poor writing. I admit that I have a chuckle at these recordings myself, but Orson's being sufficiently clear.

Welles knows what he is talking about. he is very critical. he always took long to make his films, as he had to add the finest details. those writers of the commercial were hypocrites.

And not all business has to be a cut throat affair. Believe it or not, some businesses operate with a conscious and a soul, and still do well at the end of the year. What you're saying is just what they want people to believe, and what they tell themselves at night to sleep easier. And it doesn't always work either, as reading any world newspaper these days will tell you, sometimes, after all the pain and suffering, isn't even good business.

I understand how the industry works, I understand it's a fickle, heartless, stupid machine that exist solely to shovel stupid shit into peoples mouths and will dismiss entire careers at will for whatever reason it feels like. I know, and I'm not denying it. What I'm saying is, is that I don't really think it's all that condemnable of an act, as a person, between you, me, and everyone here. It's quite understandable, I don't blame him at all.

Sure, the material stinks. But, the problem with your assertion is that the bad material alone is no excuse. And, yes, it is tragic how a star of such stature can be brought down low, but that's a sob story that the industry never wants to hear, much less take to heart. That's just the way the business is and it is*exactly* what it is: a business. You have to do what you need to in order to keep a roof over your head and to eat.

Well, wasn't it unprofessional to write such a God awful script, and then hand it to one of the greatest dramatic forces of the 20th century, at his lowest moment? The man went from Citizen Kane to whoring himself for stupid pea commercials because of a string incredibly bad luck, and a system too ignorant to realize his enormous talent. It's fucking tragic, and I think him being unprofessional in the studio for some moronic ad is pretty damn forgivable, professionally and personally.

Another vote for Negativland's "Jolly Green Giant", which takes this clip and makes it sound almost eerie by superimposing it over ominous sounding music. I sympathise with Orson, but I guess he took the job so he should have done it to the best of his abilities. "This is a lot of shit, you know that?" lol:-)
